Jack Steele is a watercolor artist whose “ultimate influence for creating art stems directly from the Godhead and the amazing creation that is in and all around us.” He also draws inspiration from the works of Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Homer, Turner, and Hopper, as well as from the contemporary watercolor work of Charles Reid, Judy Morris, and Alvaro Castagnet.
Steele visited Big Bone Gardens on July 2, 2011 to paint the blooming lotus pond. Here is his account of the day:
“I went out to paint this Saturday and was directed to this wonderful garden. It was overcast and a bit dreary (light wise, I was still enthralled by the environs) at first, but when the sun finally came up, it was beautiful… completely different light. I decided to sit on [a rickety bench] rather than lug my chair up the hill to get to the pond. Right away I told myself, ‘Don’t lean back!’ Well, I got into my painting and forgot what I was doing and slowly stretched back… In super slow motion, the bench carried me back and gently crashed me down the hill. The funny thing was when I unwrapped myself from the wreckage and righted the bench, a pleasant scent of rosemary filled the air as I had crushed some in the fall!”
And here is the result, a beautiful watercolor painting of the Big Bone Gardens lotus pond:
